Nicholas has trained amongst some of Australia's finest composes including Larry Sitsky, Anne Boyd, Ross Edwards, Matthew Hindson, Kirsty Beilharz and Moya Henderson.

Amongst his erhu teachers are highly renowned performers Chen Xuebing, formerly on staff at the Beijing Arts University and Shanghai Radio Orchestra's Henry Chao.
